FOUNDATION STAGE
We believe assessment is an integral part of Foundation learning and teaching. As well as monitoring progress it plays a key role in schedule planning and target-setting.
Because we recognise that each child is individual, at Foundation stage specifically, a baseline assessment is carried out to determine what skills and knowledge each child brings to school upon entry. This allows our teachers to then plan accurately for the next learning steps and ensures each child experiences an appropriate curriculum.
We also believe that supporting children involves everyone and we have robust systems in place to identify and nurture children who need a little extra help to make sense of the learning environment. They are given lots of help, encouragement, and space to complete tasks in their own time. Sensitive booster groups are also available for Reading, Maths, and building fine motor skills. There is also the opportunity for Foundation stage children to enjoy extra time with specialist staff across a range of subjects including Music, Arabic, and PE.
Whatever their additional requirements, our support starts in the daily planning for every classroom lesson. Groupings are also used as appropriate to the needs of learners so these may be ability, mixed ability, pairs or individuals.
In addition, further provision supports specific difficulties, eg booster groups for reading or maths or extra sessions to develop fine motor skills. All programmes are based on analysis of students’ needs using assessment data and teachers’ observations and judgements to ensure the most effective support is offered.
Our specialist Oasis Team in the primary school provides just the right level of support and liaises closely with class and specialist teachers, senior leaders, and parents.
