STIMULATING TOPICS

Learning is not restricted to our classrooms, and we have worked hard to develop a culture in which freedom of expression and exploration percolate through the curriculum at all levels.

We’re immensely proud of how Creative Arts and Performing Arts are valued by both parents and students and actively encourage students to visit theatres, museums, and galleries, and represent the school at regional and national competitions.

Creative Arts includes Art, Photography, and Design & Technology. Performing Arts includes Drama, Dance, and Music.

Students experience a wide range of stimulating and engaging topics at all levels, delivered by a highly motivated and passionate team who understand that this important area of the curriculum develops creativity and social skills such as teamwork and confidence.

CREATIVE

As well as being popular with students, the Creative Arts and Performing Arts subjects also provide rigorous and challenging content through to GCSE, BTEC and A-level.

Our curriculum is facilitated by a wide range of specialised facilities including a drama room, two music rooms, five individual music practice rooms, an Apple Mac suite, three art rooms, a photography dark room, design technology workshops and an additional computer suite. Our large auditorium plays host to many performances and productions throughout the academic year, both in school and in the wider community.

Alongside the curriculum, our professional and passionate staff facilitate many extra-curricular projects in a wide variety of disciplines, catering for every interest of our varied student body. This helps them embed Performing Arts and Creative Arts into the everyday life of the school.

We are equally proud of the range of opportunities that students have to further develop their passion. Many have showcased their hard work and talents in:

  • Drama Productions – Foundation and Primary (Years 1, 2 & 6) Showcase Event

YEARS 7 – 9

The Performing Arts and Creative Arts curricular are dynamic and exciting for all students in Year 7 through to Year 9.

Throughout these years, students receive a dedicated 1-hour lesson each week with a specialist teacher to enhance their knowledge, develop an understanding and increase their engagement in each of the Arts subjects of Drama, Music, Art, Design & Technology and Food & Nutrition.

YEARS 10 – 11

Our Key Stage 4 curriculum is created and delivered to support students who intend to go on to study GCSE Art & Design, GCSE Design & Technology, GCSE Drama and/or GCSE Music.

The GCSE specifications in Creative Arts and Performing Arts subjects have both practical and theoretical elements to them. Throughout Years 10 and 11, students have 3 hours of dedicated lesson time with a subject specialist, and at the end of the two-year GCSE programme they are assessed.

Students are exposed to a wide range of techniques to develop their own style and appreciation of Creative Arts and Performing Arts. All students are encouraged to have creative freedom and ownership of their ideas and work.

Our extra-curricular programme continues to offer numerous Creative Arts and Performing Arts opportunities for all students. Our Key Stage 4 students also participate in the various showcase evenings and productions, not just as performers but also as lighting, sound, set and stage assistants.

YEARS 12 – 13

A GCSE qualification is a prerequisite for students wishing to study Creative Arts and/or Performing Arts at A-level or BTEC.

A-level and BTEC Creative Arts and Performing Arts subjects also have both practical and theoretical elements to them, and like the GCSE, students are assessed on their ability to produce and perform skills that they have previously studied and refined across Year 12 and Year 13.

A-level students are exposed to a wider range of techniques and develop greater breadth and depth of knowledge. To help them achieve this, students have an extra six hours of dedicated subject time per week. Whilst students are expected to work on projects and assignments outside designated lesson time, ongoing support from specialist teachers within the Creative Arts and Performing Arts departments is available.

Key Stage 5 students will begin to support extra-curricular clubs and societies, taking on additional responsibility to support performances and productions; hosting showcase evenings, and contributing to choreography, set design, lighting and sound.

BTEC International Level 3 Performing Arts

What the Course Involves
The BTEC International Level 3 Performing Arts programme at Jebel Ali School is a practical, industry-focused course designed for students aged 16–19 who are passionate about performance and the creative arts. The course supports progression to university, specialist drama schools, and careers within the creative industries, both locally and internationally.
This internationally recognised Pearson qualification places practical learning at its core. Students develop their skills through workshops, rehearsals, performances, and creative projects rather than traditional written exams. Learning reflects professional rehearsal and production processes, enabling students to gain real-world experience in a supportive school environment.

Practical and Creative Learning
Students develop performance skills including acting technique, movement, voice, characterisation, stagecraft, and ensemble work. They learn how to rehearse effectively, respond to direction, collaborate creatively, and refine performance work through feedback and reflection. The course also encourages students to devise original material, exploring ideas from initial concept through to live performance.

Assessment and Coursework
Assessment is completed through coursework and practical performance tasks, supported by reflective and evaluative evidence. There are no final exams. Students are graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction, allowing them to demonstrate both artistic ability and professional working practices.

Industry Links and Professional Insight
BTEC Performing Arts students at Jebel Ali School are actively involved in putting on productions, working through the full process from rehearsal to live performance. Students develop performance skills while also gaining an understanding of the wider production process, including rehearsal planning, stagecraft, and technical elements such as lighting and sound.
The course is enriched through collaboration with professional industry practitioners in Dubai, with visiting actors, directors and creatives leading workshops and masterclasses. Where appropriate, students may also access work experience opportunities, gaining insight into real-world creative environments.
Together, these experiences help students build confidence, professionalism and a clear understanding of how performance skills connect to the wider creative industries.
